ok yes i know u will no doubt all be with the much hating me for kicking this off again, i just was reading some ancient interview with John and Adam and this bit came up, it aint much really, but could be interesting for anyone who is interested in this or doesn know about it...btw on 'There's no I in Team', is it just me or does Jesse get sampled in that kinda breakdown bit? i noticed this and then without mentioning it, my friend brought it up...anyone clear that up for me??
Sorry the interview bit... NOTE: 'S' is the interviewer, 'J' is John Nolan...
S: What's the whole story behind the Brand New lyrics, because I have heard so many stories about that.
J: I think that's where I come in. We've just started to get questions about it now. Its something actually that went down quite awhile ago
S: Is it really personal, that you don't wanna talk about?
J: It's personal, but the fact is, that we wrote a song about it, and they wrote a song about it, so you gotta kind of expect to get questions about it. Some interest in it. And I can't say that we did it expected to not talk about it. It was based on something that went down. Me and Jesse (who's the singer from Brand New) have been friends since grade school.
S: yea, you guys kind of look alike
J: yea, I get that a lot , and then about a year ago, there was a little incident that went down involving a girl, and around the same time, we both wrote our own songs about it, basically b/c it was something that was going on in our lives and so he wrote a song about it, obviously b/c it was something that was very I dunno
S: close to the heart?
J: yea.. close to his heart, yea.. and I did as well. And then they're album came out first. And then we heard their song, and then some of the things were changed around after we heard their song, so it was a little bit of a response to their song on our part. Basically if you listen to both of the songs, and you're really interested in to know what happened. I really think that it'd fit together. I mean, both his song, and our song .. the lyrics are very very personal, and very very in depth in a certain way, maybe not in an obvious way but if you really listen to his song and you listen to our song. With the stuff that I put into it and the stuff that he puts into it, I think it says about all it needs to say about it. But suffice to say that we were very good friends, and are still friends in a certain way. But have had a situation that has come between us, and have expressed it through the songs that we have written.
S: OK, I'm sorry for prying into your personal life.
J: no, honestly it's expected. Like if I didn't want anyone to know about it, I wouldn't have written a song about it. And you know people are going to be interested and people are going to ask what's going on, specifically we have put things in reference to their songs, b/c its kind of an interesting little thing to have going on there.
A: like a little LL cool J thing.. ya know a hip-hop battle
J: yea
S: drama.. yea, I gotcha
J: so we tried to get a little controversy or interest in what was going on there. So if it makes it difficult when it actually comes down to it , to talk about it, but its like I dunno. That's about all there is..
S: that's fine, you said your point.. If anybody wants to know more they can listen to it
